Facilities Mangement Internship Program

The Smithsonian is the world’s most unique research, exhibition and museum complex and the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR) staff provides the environment that supports the staff and visitor experience. OFMR operates and maintains the facilities of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., which attract over thirty million visitors each year. OFMR also provides energy management, systems engineering, support services and facilities technology for Smithsonian facilities. OFMR internship opportunities are available in some of the following facilities disciplines:
- Public facility maintenance and operations
- Sustainability and energy management
-Cultural facility management
- Assessments of building performance
- Facility management best practices
- Perform analysis of organizational training programs
Expenses & Stipends
Expenses & Stipends
A limited number of paid internships are available. Prospective interns should confirm whether payment is available for the project in which they are interested prior to final acceptance of the internship. Paid internships offer stipends of $400/week for undergraduate and $450/week for graduate students. Candidates must pay for their own travel, housing, and subsistence during the period of the internship. Personal Protective Equipment is required for certain projects.
Academic Credit
Interns may arrange for academic credit through their college or university.

How to Apply
The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR) accepts current and recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students studying facility management, engineering, business, or other related fields. Selection is based on an evaluation of the application, an interview and available positions.
Duration: 10 to 16 weeks

Requirements for applying to the OFEO-OFMR intern program:

- Two letters of recommendation
- College transcript(s)
- Cover letter
Completed on-line application package must include all of the above and be submitted prior to the deadline to be considered.
DEADLINES: While most OFMR internships take place during summer months, a limited number of opportunities exist for internships during other months; applicants should confirm the dates of proposed internships prior to final acceptance. Applications for internships should be received no later than the dates listed below. Internships will begin approximately three months after the deadline.
Summer Internships - February 15
Fall Internships - June 15
Winter Internships - October 15
