Facilities Mangement Internship Program

The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR) operates and maintains the facilities of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., which attract over twenty million visitors each year. OFMR also provides energy management, systems engineering, support services and facilities technology for Smithsonian facilities. The Smithsonian is the world’s most unique research, exhibition and museum complex and OFMR staff provide the environment that supports the staff and visitor experience.

Numerous OFMR internship opportunities are available throughout the year in the following disciplines:

- Public facility maintenance and operation
- Create an assets database for OFMR
- Assist in the development of environmental health and safety (EHS) training
- Assessments of building performance for heating and cooling seasons against goals
- Design and implement web pages on the Smithsonian intranet
- Perform analysis of organizational training programs

Expenses & Stipends

A limited number of paid internships are available. Stipends pay $400/week for undergraduate and $450/week for graduate students. Candidates must pay for their own travel, housing, and subsistence during the period of the internship. Personal Protective Equipment is required for certain projects.

Academic Credit

Interns may arrange for academic credit through their college or university.

 

 

Eligibility

The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR) accepts current and recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students studying facility management, engineering, business, or other related fields. Selection is based on both an evaluation of the applicant’s application and available positions.

Duration: 10 to 16 weeks

Deadlines

Although applications are received and evaluated on a continuing basis, the application deadline for summer internships is February 15.

Applications for fall, winter, and spring internships are due three months prior to the proposed start date of the internship.
