Comments:
The Smithsonian Quadrangle brings together two museums and many disparate offices into a single structure. Ninety-six percent of the Quadrangle resides underground. The complex houses a museum, two galleries, an auditorium, and offices of the various Smithsonian programs and the Enid A. Haupt Garden. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery complements the Freer Gallery’s collection with its contemporary Asian art. The National Museum of African Art is the leading center for the ancient and contemporary visual arts of Africa. The S. Dillon Ripley Center shelters the diverse offices and an International Gallery within the Quadrangle. Separate entrance structures designate each entity. The Enid A. Haupt Garden occupies the “roof” of the Quadrangle and was a gift of Ms. Haupt.
